Winter in Southern California

Our roses bloom in December, nowhere better to be than the Huntington Library and gardens. Sharing some pictures, but the smell!  So many roses today are big and beautiful – but their distinctive odor has been lost in the process. So feast your eyes on some beauty, but go the Huntington for the full experience. From bright yellow….To…..Blush on the rims of the petals… Through the pinks….To red! Whites, purples, and many other colors in between.

Then on to other flowering plants.Purple berries.Golden Ginko leaves on the tree.Strange flowers on the aloe.More weirdness. And a bee busy at work.

Back to mosaic, sort of

I have made some beautiful mosaics, with glass tiles. I need to make some more. But that sewing maching and knitting needles have just monopolized my time.p1170139At a wedding recently, the party favors were these tiles, so I went around and asked people if they planned on taking them home, many said no and handed them over to me. See how nicely they go with my pot?  Notice that although I’ve owned this pot for many years the sales tag is still on it??  Yeah, I didn’t either until I saw the photo.p1160688Love the happy colors.p1170142I had to ask around the tables to fill out my numbers. These were the table numbers.  Can you see how the old original metal numbers are still sort of there, but covered up with the stucco.p1170140I had some old premixed thinset and I slapped these tiles onto the risers of the front stairs.p1170141Within a day or two they started falling off. So back to Home Depot to buy fresh thinset. I think it’s holding this time.img_5830Looks lovely with my pots and my fall pumpkins.p1170143The longer view. And now, really, I need to do some more glass mosaic.

Hollyhock

A post dedicated to one flower.P1150526I have been remiss in my garden, but busy with the camera in other gardens.P1150560P1150522This is an easy flower to grow in California, so I can’t explain why it isn’t all over mine.P1150563The pinks get darker and darker.P1150540Some are already red.P1150562P1150565But translucent as the sun shines through.P1150564And then we get one so dark, it could almost be called black.P1150561Which is why it is so hard to photograph.P1150605Not even a pretend hollyhock, but I couldn’t resist.

Butchart Gardens

As a lover of flowers and colors, Butchart gardens in a must.P1150219The day was overcast, but no rain. Probably better to see flowers that way than in bright sunlight. Notice I am dressed for a California winter.P1150223The old cement quarry in all it’s glory. A collection of gardens this size is an ongoing project. Still in the hands of the same family, they are doing a magnificent job, of both maintaining the gardens and sharing them with vast numbers of visitors.P1150224This is my second visit, I have only been here in summer, each season has it’s own beauty.  This could be an inspiration for a quilt or artwork, the shapes, the shades of green, the pops of color.P1150224Flippossibilitiesing for black and white open up all kinds of new posiblities.

But back to colorP1150276One can take a boat ride out on the water, this is an island after all.P1150246I only rode the bronze horse, not the many fanciful animals on the merry-go-round.P1150280And now to the flowers, interesting how in a compact grouping, they include mostly common flowers like geraniums and coleus for contrast in color and texture.P1150248The individual flowers are irresistable.P1150229P1150240 P1150249P1150286 P1150283The bees are busy, without them, no flowers.P1150269 P1150287P1150267Nature produces the most vibrant colors.P1150282Often the texture and color of leaves is more impressive than flowers.P1150262Sometimes it’s just the flower.P1150233and sometimes, it’s how one looks at a tree.P1150258Especially if it is the strange monkey puzzle tree.P1150274Or

The Huntington Garden part II

Chinese Garden, Huntington Library, San Marino

And now for the built environment. The Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library, San MarinoA look at the central courtyard with it’s wonderful textures and shapes.P1130616Another favorite, the exterior wall – otherwise known as the dragon wall.P1130623An overwhelming display of shape, texture, line and design.P1130652I don’t know what this says, I just know that I found this image pleasing.P1130658More concrete work, once again, I didn’t see the details inside until I got a close look at my photo. I’m pretty sure this represents a cloud.IMG_4242Looking down I see a quilt pattern, complete with the quilting lines in place.P1130635A Pagoda with circular windows. From the opposite side, looking through those windows out to the lake.P1130636The circle motif is repeated with the reflection.P1130629A closer look.P1130664In the neighboring Japanese garden the half circle here is called a drum bridge.Water is wonderful! Can’t get enough of it.P1130646P1130655The ducks are right at home.P1130631As are the geese. These aren’t Canada Geese, they banish those and they only let one pair live in the garden. The woke up shortly after this and squawked around the lake.

Another wonderful day in a wonderful location right here in the LA area.

Phoenix Arizona

Joel had a business conference and although there is ‘nothing’ for spouses, I went along. I can always find things to do, especially since there are a few other wives that show up.P1130544I’m not a fan of the Arizona dessert. It also was very cold, mid 50s. I brought my winter gear and was fine, but it certainly didn’t feel like an escape.P1130547Water fountains take on a much bigger significance in the dessert.P1130553The flora doesn’t excite me, although nice barrel cactii are fun. Looks like a few more weeks and these guys will bloom.P1130552The one cactus that is really unique to this area is the mighty Saguaro. Though sometimes they do need help to stay upright.   The one on the right has an interesting anomaly.P1130575This crested fan is due to fascination. Look it up on Wikipedia.  It is some form of disease that doesn’t harm the plant but results in the unique shape.P1130550I went with a friend to the adorable town of Carefree. A small town built in the 1950s.  The developers clearly had a good sense of humor.P1130562Whats not to love about Ho Hum Road?P1130559The antique shops are fun, my friend inherited this exact Singer sewing machine from her grandmother, although it sounds like hers is in better shape.P1130557They don’t make them like this anymore. I love that these machines were not only functional tools, but made to be as beautiful as possible. P1130560Any current textile designers out there?  Please knock off this cute print!  Looks like a 1950s design to me.P1130573The cat isn’t for sale,  I just love his attitude!P1130564A nice touch, making the relatively new buildings look old.P1130565Of course I’m drawn to tiles – as kitchy as they may be.P1130574Cactii, rusted metal art and Marilyn – as good as it gets.IMG_4229We literally stumbled upon an adorable tea shop. English Rose Tea Room. They have a trunk full of hats, so one can greet the Queen respectfully.P1130576I love the creativity of using the chipped and broken tea pots and tea cups.  This was a delightful way to finish out an lovely day.

Limoncello

My Meyer Lemon Tree is finally producing a lot of fruit.P1120797

A friend recommended that I make Limoncello, she even sent me the recipe.P1120796So I picked the lemons.

P1120802Bought some American Handmade Vodka. Not sure how one ‘hand makes’ vodka. Is it like moonshine?

P1120803Peeled the lemons very thinly.

P1120805Put them in mason jars, the recipe said, steep for 4 days.

P1120858Turns out it all fit in one jar.

P1120862Then I made a simple syrup, sugar and water, I cut down on the sugar just a little. Combined the two and voila – Limoncello. I also refilled the vodka bottle, but this is a prettier picture. I love how yellow it is. So not only did the peels infuse the vodka with a wonderful strong lemony taste, it gives it a bright yellow color.

P1120903YUM!  Success, and since I have so many lemons, I will probably make more to give as gifts. The leftover fruit will become marmalade, nothing wasted here.  LeChaim!

Home and Garden.

There is a saying in Los Angeles (and probably other cities as well) that we don’t respect history and we tear everything down.  What is interesting is that often someone will buy an old historic home, fall in love with it and spend the rest of their lives and money to restore and lovingly care for it.P1110815Such is this beautiful home in the Pasadena area. A Tudor revival built in 1927. Sitting on ten acres of gardens.  It is a real treat to visit, to meet the owners who are pouring heart and soul into this gem.P1110817They have added new buildings on the property and yet have been able to find craftsmen to do the same kind of top notch work as was done almost 100 years ago.  Sure, it took very wealthy men to build these homes in the first place, but I’m thinking that labor was much cheaper – even the kind that did the incredible detail work.P1110820Old tools are collected and often used in making new design elements.ThorntonLike these wonderful corbels in the modern workshop.P1110862A look at the French doors from the outside.P1110841And from inside looking out to the folly. Yes, every Tudor home needs one.P1110851From exterior  attention to details, like this 45 degree angle corbel.P1110860To a wonderful brick chimney that survived all the earthquakes since the 1932 Long Beach one.P1110833From plasterworkP1110838incredible sconces.P1110839The Crystal ball of a large chandelier.P1110844To more mundane details like the window latch.P1110842The wonderful original nickel sink, with all the dents from years of dishes being washed in it.P1110847Or one of many lovingly restored Ruud water heaters.P1110813 Most of the garden is wonderful old oaks, unfortunately many are dying due to a nasty beetle that arrived in packing material from Vietnam.P1110855A massive rose garden that is suffering in the late September heat.P1110867There were a few areas with flowers, the kind that thrive on heat.P1110869And water features, both a pond.P1110888and numerous fountains.P1110879A kitchen garden with vegetables, herbs and flowers.P1110884As well as an arbor with Pinot Noir grapes. So far they have only become juice, not wine.P1110890A ‘potting shed’ with lovely stain glass windows.P1110875And some pretty amazing orchids.

Little birds

I have quite a few hummingbirds in the garden, simple grey ones.  So many that I have two nests, one in front of the house and one in back.P1080814In both cases, right under the eaves on the twinkle lights.  As you can see, the nest is tiny.  So far, no action on the front nest.P1090396The back one is being used.  It isn’t easy getting a picture of mama bird. When I come outside she flies away.P1090401At one point when she was gone, I brought up the ladder and had to maneuver the camera over the nest to get pictures, of course I didn’t want to touch anything.  Two tiny little eggs.

If I am ever able to capture the actual birds, I’ll be happy to share.

Community Garden

On Magnolia Blvd in Encino, right off the freeway is a large community garden. Most of the plots are occupied although a few are left fallow. P1080825In my friend’s plot the squash is growing!P1080839This cabbage is ripe, come pick it already!P1080829Plenty of rabbits are on the ready to harvest these.P1080819Ooops, if you don’t pick the artichoke this is what happens. Yes, the chock turns into a beautiful purple flower, but too many artichoke plants had this happening.P1080835This is a major operation, wonder if these are table grapes or wine grapes?  There are people around who make their own wine, not very good. Beer making is simple and easy, wine – not so much.P1080836Then there are the decorative touches, very large sunflower. Which can also be useful, all those seeds dried and salted make a perfect snack. When I first moved to Israel I ate the whole thing and choked on the shells. I quickly learned how to shell and spit out the spent shells. A real Israeli talent and very addicting.P1080831A cacti and succulent garden. This is a group effort, not just one person. Notice how the thorns by the delicate flowers are the biggest and nastiest. Of course soon the flower will turn to fruit, the source of the next generation, must protect at all costs.P1080833Other cacti have very strange and unusual flowers.P1080823Some decorations are meant to keep out the birds. I’m thrilled that I actually caught this in motion.P1080816I wonder if this is a more effective bird deterrent?  P1080830Look up! Always look up. the Jacaranda trees are in full bloom right now and what a beautiful bloom it is. although most drivers who are forced to park under these trees would not agree. These purple flowers are quite a mess as they fall.P1080840Finally, the Magnolia tree in bloom. The namesake of the street and yes , there are plenty of these trees alongs this long boulevard.  Actually these trees thrive throughout the valley, now they are in bloom, in a few months they will drop their strange cone like fruit.
