In praise of natural fibers

I’d say that close to all of my clothes are made of one natural fiber or another, sure there are blends, but there is a natural component.  I also love color and cute prints.P1080369Can you blame me for buying this shirt a few years ago?P1080371The birds, the adorable lace trim on the collar!

This shirt is 100% polyester and I knew it when I bought it, but so what right?  Turns out that unless they are heavily engineered (microfiber, underarmour tee shirts) polyester is an extremely uncomfortable fabric.  Natural fibers will react to my body heat, polyester seems to react to the environment.  So on a chilly day, although this shirt has long sleeves, it felt like I was wearing a refrigerator. The opposite happened on warm days, I was in a sweat box.

So, this is going into the goodwill pile and I don’t care how cute or cheap, impulse buys cannot include polyester shirts or dresses.

Oh, Serger is back from repairs!  P1080362This may have some polyester in it, it’s one of those Michael Levine Loft knits. I love the color and it has the feel of cotton.P1080377Combined with a cute knit I found at JoAnn’s I have myself an adorable outfit.P1080379I found an easy tutorial on You Tube  (no I didn’t bookmark it) for a pencil skirt.P1080374Really, I should stick to buying fabric,  I get double the enjoyment, cute clothes as well as the pleasure of creating somethingP1080383Now if only it would get a little warmer,  as I age, I’m one of those who feels the cold more, so mid 70’s finds me in long sleeves. But no worries, in a few days I’ll be wearing this cute outfit.

Sew Together Bag again!

Did I mention that I met Michele from Sewdemented at Quiltcon?  Well I did, had lunch with her, what a lovely lady.  Here I am making yet another one of her wonderful Sew Together Bags.

I love making them and people love receiveing them. This one is for my son in law Yoch, he is busy making quilts for so many people and I know he will put this bag to good use.P1080065You probably know by now that green is his favorite color, must be the Irish in him.P1080067Instead of some kind of patchwork on the exterior, I’m practicing my walking foot quilting.P1080069Love the result.P1080071The interior is where all the happy brightness is happening.  Every time I make one of these there is a small improvement. This time it’s the tabs at the ends of the zippers,  spiced things up by using a red print.P1080112The bag is taking shape, with a pin cushion and a needle pad. When making these for non sewers, I omit that step.P1080119I am getting better at including my label in my projects.P1080117Another personalized touch,  an interesting bead as the zipper pull.P1080125Quiet, sedate, masculaine bag.P1080120Until you open it up and it just pops with vibrant colors!

One doesn’t give a gift unwrapped.  Recently I found this book:P1080127I knowThe Japanese art of wrapping items in cloth.  P1080128I know, this could almost qualify for ‘I nailed it!’.  Here’s the deal, quilting cotton doesn’t drape like a soft silk. Also, the colors, yellow and green, the colors of the Oregon ducks (and yes, I bought this fabric in Oregon). Yoch is from there, so he can relate very well. This serves not only as a gift wrapping but as more fabric for his stash.  Don’t worry, I still have some of my own leftover.

I gave it to Yoch right before he left on a trip. Of course he loves it, and it will get a lot of use both on his trip and when he gets home.

Buttons, buttons, buttons

So many of us have a tin or box of buttons. Usually it is handed down from our grandma and we just keep adding to it, and adding and adding….

A few months ago a friend gave me her mother’s box. Her mother moved into a senior citizen home and my friend asks me to sew on a button for her here and there.

P1080132The center tin is my original box, you can see that my buttons were getting out of hand and I decided that it was time to actually do some arranging and creating a better system, so that I can actually find a button, or a set when I need themP1080179The easiest was to gather the sets that are still on cards, I decided to include all my wooden button into this group as well.P1080159Original tin is still pretty messy, it is now colored buttons, medium to large size. Yes, I probably only have 3 or 4 of a set, but sometimes, that is enough.P1080172White and very pale buttons get their own box.P1080157Metal! If you notice there is a square button with green thread – yes, this came from my friend’s mom, many of her buttons were removed from suits and coats. She got rid of the garments but figured these nice set of  buttons might come in handy. Like when you buy a nice suit with cheap buttons (happens all the time), and you have nice ones on hand to replace them with.  I also have a box of plastic buttons that look like metal, I think I bought a whole bag of them for $3.P1080160Medium to small colored buttons.P1080161Tiny buttons, really tiny.P1080165Here they are in comparison to a 1″ and 1.25″ button. P1080167Mother of Pearl, comes in different shapes (square, fish) as well as a few that are dyed, (blue, red).P1080183Nice neat boxes all lined up.P1080185And stored away in a drawer.  Just the other day Joel needed a simple white button for a dress shirt, the kind you take to the cleaners and have the seamstress there put a new one on. It was so easy to go to the white box and immediately find what I wanted.

A few months ago I organized my fabric, now it’s the buttons.  Sure the fabrics aren’t quite as neat as they were, but they are still folded nicely and are not in a jumble.  I think having a system for the buttons will make a difference as well.  And now, back to actually making something.

Adventures in sewing

On a recent trip to Michael Levine’s loft I bought some lovely rayon challis and was anxious to get sewing, too anxious apparently.P1080058I misplaced an important pattern piece, then when I discovered the mistake, there wasn’t enough fabric left, I pieced some together.  Guess what that didn’t work out so well, so into the trash the whole mess went.

Instead I used some quoting cotton I got from a friend and a whole different pattern that felt like it could handle the stiffness of the fabric.  New Look 0125.  Serious seamstresses always say – make a muslin. Sorry, I sew for pleasure, I’m not a couture seamstress. So I didn’t.  And guess what, same mistake, I cut 2 of the pleats instead of 4.New Look 0125This time it worked out better than expected, I went into my fabric stash and found something to tone down the busy floral print. I think this look works much better. Yay for being forced to find creative solutions! Imagine my surprise when WSJ had an article about Sharp Florals, combining florals with solids in high fashion. As in $4000 high fashion. I don’t try to follow trends or create them, but when it happens I don’t complain.P1080076I like a full skirt that has some swing!  P1080103Once again, one of the big problems I have with quilting fabric is that it is so often one directional. Maybe you can’t see it in this busy print, but I can’t help not seeing it.  I spent many years studying, then working in the industry creating pleasing all-over prints. When I am out in public, I am always looking at  printed clothing, figuring out where the repeat is. Judging the pattern, yes, crazy I know.P1080096I’m sure I could have flipped some of the pattern pieces and no one (except me) would have noticed. But I just couldn’t do it. P1080099Oh and back to fitting, yeah, I had some issues. The waist was too low, I don’t like this gaping armhole.  When I first tried it on, it just looked frumpy. Lucky for me the issue was taking in seams, so I was able to adjust most of the issues, except this armhole, which will remain as is.P1080114The dress has a pocket, since the skirt is so full, a pocket is a great thing to have. If the dress is tight and form fitting – then I find the extra bulk of a pocket unflattering.  My serger is still in the shop, 5 weeks later!  I did get a call saying the missing part was sent out, so I really hope to have it back next week. I cut out all the pattern pieces with my pinking rotary cutter, we’ll see if I like the result after a few washings.P1080113A big reason why I ran out of the floral print was the hem of the skirt.  The skirt was cut in pieces but is pretty much a full circle skirt, this kind of separate hem give the skirt body and structure. The pattern called for interfacing, seeing that I used firm quilting cotton, I skipped that step.  P1080104After mistakes, tweaks and work arounds, I am very happy with this dress. So much so that I might make another version, one where the top and skirt are different fabrics and the skirt is straight.  At least now I know what adjustments to make before I cut into the fabric, not to mention that it won’t take 4 yards to make.

Oh and I found some more Rayon Challis in my Michael Levine’s bag!  So I can go back and make the original pattern after all!

Sewing little dresses

Little girl dresses are so much fun. Oliver and S knows how to design them well. Using the Roller Skating pattern and some fabric I got on sale at Sew Modern.Roller skating dressI went through my stash and found just enough of the striped fabric for the collar. Roller skating dress, backI love these little girls jumping rope.pink dressI even found the perfect button.

With the right accessories, the outfit is perfect.

Granville Shirt

I am sewing garments again!!  The Granville shirt by Sewaholic.  I have a number of button down shirt patterns, so I”m not sure why I spent $18 to buy this paper pattern. I like the big four pattern companies and often the independents aren’t worth the extra money.

Well Tasia really knows her stuff. Her patterns are well written and have interesting details that put them above your average pattern.

P1070731Most patterns give you the simplest of plackets, not Tasia.  I have tried to draft this placket on my own, with moderate success so it’s a pleasure to simply have it included and of course, I can transfer it to any other cuffed blouse as well.P1070733If you look closely you can see that there is a separate buttonhole band on the right side of the shirt, but the left is simply interfaced and turned. P1070734My serger is in the shop. Grrrrr! Of course it needs parts that are backordered.  This is what I hate about bringing a machine in for a repair, invariably something is wrong (I do work my machines very hard) and of course the part has to be ordered, often taking months to arrive.  So I made French seams instead of simply serging them. Yes, they are nice and clean and very professional looking.

And now for the fit. People talk about pattern fit all the time, sometimes you will find a company or style that works just fine with no alterations. This is why people tell you to make a muslin. Well I didn’t make a muslin, but I did make some adjustments after the fact.P1070694There is nice shaping at the waist here. Problem for me is that the bottom of the shirt is simply too wide and to my eye, not flattering on me.P1070697I just feel the shirt should be a little tighter on my body.P1070728The sleeves are a little long, but folding back the cuffs just looks messy.  You can see here how the shirt has too much fabric and even tucked in it’s bunching up.

I did some hacking, as in I took off some fabric from the side seams. I may have take a little too much, since now the shirt bunches up a bit in the back. P1070741Don’t know what’s up with my hair, it’s not that windy.  You can see that the fit is better.P1070746I figured if I keep the cuff buttoned and just fold it up half way, I’m fine.  I will probably shorten the sleeve in the pattern.

Yes, I will make this shirt again, I like a nice button down shirt.  As a quilter, I clearly have to combine more than one fabric, but that makes it my shirt.  And I really hope to get my serger back soon, I have some knit shirts and dresses I really want to make.

Sewing clothes again

You have probably noticed that it has been quite a long time since I’ve made an item of clothing.  A lot of quilts, bags and smaller projects.

I don’t know if it was the weather, I enjoy sewing light weight skirts and dresses.  Well with our summer like weather,  it was time to get back to garment sewing.  My serger is in the shop, I thought it would be just a simple cleaning, but no, I need parts replaced,  any knit sewing will have to wait.

So a simple skirt was in order.IMG_3115Shaeri over at Sew LA designed this skirt as a beginners project. No zipper, elastic in the back. I love the front pockets, so what the heck, instead of modifying and putting in a zipper I followed her instructions.P1070600I’m not sure I like the combination of elastic in the back and none in the front.P1070604But the front looks fine and this is just a simple skirt, took me an afternoon to make.P1070603Pockets are always nice and big yellow hibiscus from the garden (now in the house) is a lovely prop.P1070602Not every project has to be ground breaking, sweet and simple works.P1070608As does playing with camera settings.

#Crazylikefox 1 instagram exchange.

My friend Raquel started an instagram birthday exchange called Crazy like Fox.  So many people signed up she opened two groups. The idea is that one person per month has her birthday and everyone makes her something. Well, turns out that we are missing months and have 2 per month.  We didn’t have anyone for January but both Libby and I are February birthdays.  We posted our likes and dislikes and got to work on something creative. Libby is in my quilting guild, so we know each other, most of the others are completely new to me.P1060667I Libby likes red, and people were making her favorite requests already, so I figured, another project bag is always good. P1060683I used ByAnnie soft and stable. Which I had also used on my holiday gift exchange. I LOVE this product, can’t sing enough of it’s praises.P1060689This is the first time I’ve assembled a bag this way, don’t know if it’s any better,  but it worked.P1060693The outer pockets have room to store.P1060699For example, a knitting project.P1060701Empty it stands well on it’s own and is very light.P1070031Of course I added other goodies in the bag, many items from Daiso Japan. True, most things only cost $1.50 there, but oh how quickly they add up!

I have received my gift from Libby already, but that is for another post.

Edgar

Back in October, Instagram was full of images from Quilt market in Houston. I saw Heather Bailey’s newest owl pattern and I couldn’t wait to order it.  I wasn’t the only one, it was back ordered, but not by much.P1060840Since I LOVE owls, this one is for me, not for anyone else.  I’ve been busy lately so Edgar wasn’t made in one sitting and I just made one mistake that called for the seam ripper – not bad.P1060842Voila! Here he is!P1060849Side view, btw, I must commend Heather, she designs her three dimensional ‘pin cushions’ (I don’t think I’ll be sticking any pins into him) very well. Also, she is very good at writing instructions.P1060847Love that tail! He is very well balanced and stands on his own with no need to put in any plastic pellets to weigh him down.P1060845I actually took twice as many pictures, but I think this is enough, until I make his friend Poe and then they will model together.

Also, notice how much better I’m getting at this photography thing. Best advice about blurred backgrounds that I found. (I’m not getting into the triangle – this isn’t a photography blog). You need distance between the object and the background as well as using your zoom. One small focal point on the object.

I need to post pictures of my many three dimensional objects, I just love making them.

Where are my projects?

Lately it appears that I haven’t been making much, this isn’t the case. The problem is I’ve been making gifts and want them to be a surprise to the recipients. Of course I’ve been taking pictures, even writing up posts, but they will have to wait until I’ve given the gifts.

Meanwhle, I started a sweater for myself. The Hitofude cardigan.  A lightweight lacy cardigan.  On New Years I went into what will no become my new/old LYS. The Altered Stitch.  New owners bought this store and renamed it. This is walking distance from my house but I haven’t gone there in years. But now, a whole new vibe, great yarns and nice people.

The pattern called for Madeline Tosh Merino light.whitewashI was happy to look at other yarns, but this store now carries Madeline Tosh yarns! Along with other quality yarns. I can get the cheap stuff online – thank you very much.IMG_0573I wasted no time casting on. I’m loving the yarn and the project. Oh I also had to buy a new Addi Turbo needle, because I stayed there to knit and had brought the wrong size needle, oh well, it’s been a long time since I’ve got any new Addis.P1060645The color here is way to blue, but as you can see, the sweater has grown rapidly.P1060648A lot of progress, the color is most accurate in the first photo.

Another project that I have started, it’s for an instagram swap. We are asked to share progress without giving away what the object will become.P1060649I need to gift these items soon, or else make things that I can share freely.
